Why shipping was the real price at Mulebuy
A 0% purchasing fee sounds like free service, and it was not meant to be. An agent that charges nothing on the item has to earn somewhere, and for Mulebuy, as for most zero-fee agents, that was international shipping and the exchange rate. That is not a trick in itself; it simply means the shipping quote, not the item price, decides whether an order was cheap. Reviewers' most common complaint before August 2026 was exactly this: shipping was expensive, and the estimate shown when ordering was often far below the final price.
On a zero-fee agent, compare shipping, because that is where the price is.
Why estimates jump: volumetric weight
Carriers charge for the space a box takes, not just its weight. They divide the box's volume (length × width × height in centimetres) by a factor, commonly 5,000 or 6,000, and charge whichever is higher, the real weight or that volumetric weight. A pair of trainers weighs about a kilo but, in its box, can be billed as two. A puffer jacket weighs little but fills a large box. When you entered a weight in Mulebuy's estimator, you were usually entering the real weight; the warehouse then packed the parcel and the carrier priced the box.
| Item in the parcel | Why it gets expensive | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Trainers in boxes | Box volume, often double the real weight | Remove shoe boxes once you are keeping the pair |
| Puffer or padded jackets | Light but bulky | Vacuum or compressed packing where offered |
| Bags with stuffing | Filler adds volume | Ask for filler removal |
| Many small items | Each with its own packaging | Remove outer packaging; consolidate |
The reviewer who saw $64 estimated for 3.3 kg and more than $200 at the warehouse is an extreme case, but the mechanism is the usual one. Paid pre-packing, which Mulebuy called rehearsal and others call pre-pack, gives you the packed weight before you choose a line. For a big parcel it is usually worth the small fee.
Estimate with the packed size in mind, or pay for a trial packing first.
Line choice: the second biggest lever
For the same parcel, the cheapest and most expensive lines to one country can differ by a factor of two or more. Express couriers are fastest and dearest; consolidated economy lines are cheapest and slowest; tax-included lines sit in between but remove the customs bill at your door. For the EU, the tax-included line is often the better buy once you add the €3 duty per item category and VAT that a postal line would collect at delivery, plus the carrier's handling fee. The import duty calculator shows the difference for your country.
Compare lines on the delivered total, including what the carrier will charge at the door.

Budgeting by destination
- Italy: add 22% IVA on goods, shipping and duty, plus €3 per item category for parcels up to €150. Details on the Milan page.
- France and Germany: the same EU duty with 20% and 19% VAT respectively; see Paris and Berlin.
- United Kingdom: 20% VAT on consignments up to £135 is usually built into UK lines; see London.
- United States: low-value parcels lost duty-free treatment in 2025, so duty-paid lines are the norm; see New York.

Shipping cost at Mulebuy now
Since mid-August 2026, the question for Mulebuy is less what shipping costs than whether parcels move at all. Reviewers describe paying for shipping and waiting a month at "being packaged", and topping up their balance to cover shipping that then did not happen. We would not pay Mulebuy for shipping now. If you have items there, the steps on the status page matter more than any price. If you are moving, compare a real parcel on two agents with the alternatives guide, and for timing see Mulebuy shipping time. The Italian version of this page is spedizione Mulebuy.
Do not pay Mulebuy for shipping until parcels are reported moving again.
Insurance and loss cover
Buyers also searched for Mulebuy shipping insurance. Most agents offer optional cover on international lines for a small percentage of the declared value, and some lines include basic cover. Read what it pays for: loss in transit is usually covered, customs seizure usually is not, and claims need tracking evidence within a deadline. For low-value parcels it is often not worth it; for expensive hauls on economy lines, it can be.
Insurance covers loss in transit, rarely seizures; read the terms before paying.
Exchange rates are the hidden third lever. Agents convert Chinese yuan into your currency at their own rate, which can be a few percent worse than the market rate. On a large haul that adds up. Comparing the final total in your own currency for the same parcel on two agents captures it automatically.
Questions readers ask
Why is Mulebuy shipping so expensive?
Agents with a 0% purchasing fee earn on shipping and exchange rates. Bulky boxes also get charged on volumetric weight, which can be far above the real weight.
How much was Mulebuy shipping per kilo?
It depended on the line and destination, and Mulebuy did not publish a fixed rate we could verify. Compare current quotes on two agents for your own parcel instead.
Why was my estimate lower than the final price?
Estimates use the weight you enter; the final price uses the packed weight and box size. Shoe boxes, jackets and mixed items often push the volumetric weight up.
Does Mulebuy have a shipping calculator?
It showed estimates in the app. Since August 2026, buyers also report parcels not shipping at all, so we would not rely on a Mulebuy quote now.
